IRVING FINISHES 3RD IN THE 2009  AUTO CLUB LATE MODEL SERIES


11-10-09  Press Release"  IRVING TAKES FALL CLASSIC AT LVMS BULLRING
November 6 and 7 were days to remember for the #85 CHP/ Designated Driver Program Racecar Factory Late Model of Travis Irving and his crew.

The Fall Classic at the Las Vegas Bullring was kind to Travis and his team in the grueling 150 laps scheduled on Saturday night. In a race with at least a dozen cautions, and 5 of them occurring in the last 25 laps, Irving’s consistency and excellent restarts paid off. “We never turned the quickest lap. We were always between third and sixth quick, but we were the only ones that could repeat our fastest times for 25 or 30 laps.” Irving stated after collecting himself from an emotional and highly stressful main event.

After qualifying second and finishing third in a 10-lap dash which determined starting position, Irving was off to a strong start. With a 10-minute break at lap 75 to change tires and fuel and make small adjustments to the car, Irving knew he had to move quickly. “My crew really hustled and made it happen. I needed to free the back of the car up just a bit so my car chief Vince convinced me to go an extra half turn on the track bar which proved to be the winning ticket.”

By the lap 75 break, Irving had moved back into second, and took the lead with 60 laps to go. Irving knew he had something good, “As the laps wound down, it seemed like the car got faster and smoother and even with all the cautions, I was never worried about it. With Vince Lizzard of Lizzard Racing Engines building our motors, our amazing Racecar Factory chassis and my crew of David Coley, Mike Martin, Ed Irving and Vince Covarrubias, I had no doubt I had the package to bring it home for a win. The car was absolutely flawless all night.”

This was Irving’s third appearance at the Fall Classic and the win was bittersweet. In 2007, the #85 team didn’t get to race the main event. At last year’s Fall Classic, Irving qualified on the pole and was taken out of the lead in an accident with local Las Vegas driver Scott Gafforini. This time Irving was out to prove what he was made of. “Nothing could have slowed me down; with the support of Great Central Inc, PCH Motorsports, Neal trucking, and all my friends and family we were given an opportunity to show what we can do as a privateer. We can’t wait until next year….hopefully we can put together a strong season and make a run for the championship at Toyota Speedway.”

A special thanks to Nick Joanides, for getting on the radio in the first half of the race to help with his race strategy. It is rare that a competeting driver offers to lend a hand to help. Also, a long time friend and mentor Bobby Oergel of PR1.com. His help on and off the track for the past 18years of Travis’s racing career has giving him the tools to be successful and continue to live his dream to the fullest.
